How do we do it?

Recently Shinigami and I received a comment on one of our joint collaborations (Fallen). The commentator wrote:

The fact that this fic is cowritten by two authors is amazing ????? The writing flows so well and is so beautifully written I would not have assumed for a second that it was not written by one author had I not read the author's notes

So the question is, how do we do it? Answer: It's magic! 😉 Here are the steps in casting the creativity spell.

Step 1: Brainstorming session - extremely important! Can be done over a cup of tea or with a glass of wine.

Step 2: Create an outline - This is usually an outline of the story from beginning to end. It gives us direction, but is not set in stone because we love to have creative freedom.

Step 3: Set a word count limit... then throw that shit out the window, cause you can't put a cap on us. We tried.. it never works.

Step 4: Each author chooses a section to work on and then alternate throughout the story. Usually, we play to each other's strengths. Shinigami is amazing with backstory details and JJ likes to write action sequences.

Step 5: We read over each other's sections and build from them. We offer each other suggestions and feedback.

Step 6: The story gets edited multiple times (at least 4 times) before we publish it.
